Suspect arrested in CSUF Homicide

On Monday, August 19, 2019 at approximately 8:27 A.M., the Cal State Fullerton Police Department (CSUFPD) received a 9-1-1 call regarding a male down in the parking lot of Cal State Fullerton, 600 Langsdorf. Police officers from both the CSUFPD and Fullerton Police Department responded immediately and located a 57-year-old male, later identified as Steven Shek Keung CHAN, with numerous stab wounds. Officers began life-saving measures, however CHAN succumbed to his wounds and he was pronounced deceased at the scene by Fullerton Fire Department Paramedics.

The Fullerton Police Department and the Cal State Fullerton Police Department have a long standing partnership, with an aid agreement that the Fullerton Police Department will be the lead investigative agency for any homicides that occur on  campus. As such, Fullerton Police Detectives immediately responded to the scene and took over the investigation with the assistance of Cal State Fullerton Police Detectives, and the Orange County DA’s Office.

On Wednesday, August 21, 2019 at approximately 10:16 PM, Fullerton Police Detectives placed 51-year-old Chuyen VO under arrest, at his residence in the City of Huntington Beach, for the murder of Steven CHAN.

Fullerton Police Detectives believe, based on their investigation, VO acted alone during the planning and commission of this murder. We now know that VO and CHAN were co-workers, employed by Cal State Fullerton. Beyond being coworkers, we can offer no further information regarding the specific employment status of either of them. While much has already been done, in the coming days and weeks, we will be working with the Orange County District Attorney’s Office to understand the motive behind this tragic killing and to pursue a successful prosecution of VO.

Recognizing the impact this has had on the campus and surrounding community, Fullerton Police Detectives have dedicated whatever resource necessary to this investigation. Members of FPD and CSUFPD have been working around the clock since this investigation began. It is our hope that this arrest will be bring a sense of safety and security back to the CSUF community as well as the surrounding community.
